Chapter One
Something brushed against my leg. Unsure of my whereabouts, I shot up out of a bed of leaves and vines. The leaves began to char and smolder against my skin. I shook the crown of leaves from my flame-colored hair and pushed to my feet.
It took a moment to get my footing, it felt as if I hadn't stood in years. My hand found the back of my head, fingering over a few ridges of scar tissue. I began a quick inventory.
Legs. I had two.
Arms, also two.
Fingers, toes... all there.
Satisfied that I was mostly intact, I relaxed against a tree. The bark bit into my back slightly, but the sensation was welcome. It reminded me that I was still alive. The thought brought a slight smile to my face, though I wasn't quite sure how I managed.
My memories were out of order and tangled, and I may've been missing a few. My name, for the moment, was eluding me. I pushed my hands through my hair, releasing a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding.
A deep rumble cut the silence.
